“How do I generate video testimonials with AI?” is a common search, and the honest answer starts with a warning. A testimonial is a claim that a real person used your product and had a real experience. An AI presenter saying “this changed my life” is not a testimonial. It's a fabricated one, and advertising rules in many places treat it that way.

What the rules say

In the US, the Federal Trade Commission's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials prohibits fake reviews and testimonials, including ones attributed to people who don't exist or who didn't actually use the product, and it explicitly covers AI-generated ones. The UK, the EU and many other places have similar consumer protection rules against fake reviews. Ad platforms have their own policies on misleading claims and on labelling AI-generated content. This isn't legal advice, so check the rules where you advertise, but the direction is clear everywhere.

What you can do with AI, honestly

  • Collect real video testimonials and use AI to edit them: captions, cuts, hooks and formats.
  • Turn real written reviews into a video, with permission, showing the review on screen as text and attributing it to the customer, not to an AI presenter pretending to be them.
  • Have an AI presenter talk about reviews in the third person: “Customers keep telling us…”, with the real reviews shown.
  • Use an AI twin of a real customer or team member only with their explicit consent, saying things they actually said or approved.
  • Use AI presenters for explainers and demos, which make no claim of personal experience.

How to get more real video testimonials

  1. Ask at the right moment: a week or two after delivery, when the product has had time to work.
  2. Make it easy: three simple questions they can answer on their phone in under a minute.
  3. Offer a thank-you, like a discount on the next order, without conditioning it on a positive review.
  4. Get written permission to use the video in ads.
Three questions that make a good testimonial

“What were you struggling with before?”

“What changed when you started using it?”

“Who would you tell about it?”

Real testimonials are slower to collect, but they're the one kind of ad creative AI can't fake without risk. Use AI to make the most of every real one you get.
