Do AI-generated UGC ads actually convert? How to find out for your brand
Universal benchmarks for AI UGC ads don't exist. How to run a fair test of AI UGC versus creator ads, and what to measure: hook rate, CTR, CPA and ROAS.

You'll find plenty of confident numbers online about how AI UGC ads perform against creator-shot ads. Be careful with them. Results depend on the product, the audience, the offer, the platform and, above all, the creative itself. A great AI ad beats a weak creator ad and the other way round. The only benchmark that matters is the one from your own account.
The good news is that a fair test isn't hard to set up.
How to set up a fair test
- Use the same script, or the same message and structure, for both versions.
- Use the same product footage, captions style, length and call to action.
- Run them in the same ad set or campaign, to the same audience, at the same time.
- Give each version enough spend to reach a meaningful number of conversions before you decide.
- Test several pairs, not one. One AI ad versus one creator ad tells you about two videos, not two methods.
What to measure, in order
- Hook rate (thumb-stop rate): of the people who saw it, how many watched past the first few seconds. This tells you whether the opening works.
- Hold rate: how much of the video people watched. This tells you whether the body keeps them.
- Click-through rate (CTR): whether the ad makes people want to know more.
- Conversion rate on the landing page: whether the ad attracted the right people.
- Cost per acquisition (CPA) and return on ad spend (ROAS): what actually pays the bills.
Read them as a funnel. An AI ad with a lower hook rate but a similar CPA is telling you the opening needs work, not that AI UGC doesn't work.
Where AI UGC can lower CAC
The bigger effect on customer acquisition cost often isn't one ad beating another. It's testing more. If AI lets you try ten hooks in the time it took to try two, you find winners faster and spend less on losers. Production cost per video also falls, which matters when ads fatigue and need replacing. Whether that shows up as a lower CAC depends on whether the extra tests find better ads, which is why you measure.
What tends to hurt AI UGC ads
- Scripts that sound written rather than spoken.
- Presenters who don't look like the product's customer.
- No real product footage, so nothing proves the claim.
- Fake-testimonial scripts, which risk rejection, complaints and legal trouble.
So, do AI UGC ads convert? Some do, some don't, exactly like creator ads. Run the test, read the funnel, and let your own numbers decide how much of your creative should be AI.
