The modern media buyer's playbook: TikTok and Meta ad creative with AI UGC

Creative is the biggest lever left in paid social. A playbook for TikTok and Meta ad creative strategy built on AI UGC: angles, testing, fatigue and scale.

On TikTok and Meta, more and more of the targeting is done by the platform. Broad audiences and automated campaigns mean the creative itself does much of the work of finding the right people. For media buyers, that moves the job: less audience tinkering, more creative strategy. AI UGC is how a small team keeps up.

1. Treat creative as targeting

A video that calls out new parents finds new parents. A video about back pain finds people with back pain. Each angle you test is, in effect, a different audience. Build your creative plan around the people and problems you want to reach, not just around the product.

2. Test in layers: angle, then hook, then format

  1. Angle: which reason to buy works? Pain, benefit, proof, identity, price.
  2. Hook: within the winning angle, which opening line stops the scroll?
  3. Format and presenter: talking head, demo, founder, AI presenter, creator.
  4. Details last: captions, music, call to action, length.

3. Respect the platform

  • TikTok: native-looking, fast, sound-on. Ads that look like TikToks tend to perform like TikToks.
  • Meta (Reels, Stories, Feed): more placements, more formats. Export 9:16 and 4:5 at minimum, and make sure the video works muted.
  • Both: keep text away from the interface, and put the product on screen early.

4. Plan for fatigue before it happens

Every winning ad eventually wears out as the same people see it again. Watch for frequency rising while click-through and conversion rates fall. The fix is a pipeline, not a scramble: always have the next batch of variations in production, ideally new hooks on proven bodies, so a tired winner can be replaced the week it slows.

5. Give AI UGC a defined role

  • Use AI presenters for fast angle and hook tests.
  • Use real creators and customers for testimonials and for scaling proven angles.
  • Use AI editing for every video, whoever is on camera.
  • Use AI translation to take winners into new markets.

6. Keep a weekly rhythm

Review on a fixed day. Kill clear losers, scale clear winners, and feed what you learned into next week's briefs. Keep a simple log of every angle and hook you've tested and how it did. Over a few months that log becomes the most valuable creative asset you own: a map of what your customers respond to.

Turn your next take into a video people finish.

Captions timed to every word, a pinned hook and a tighter edit, all from the footage you already have.
